Slow Response Time When You Click Systems Management Server Collection Objects (829831)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you click to select a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 collection object (such as a user account object or a computer object) after the collection is updated, the object is slow to be selected. However, when you click the same object again, the object selection occurs much faster.

CAUSE

The query in SMS 2003 causes this behavior. When you first select a collection or a collection resource, there are a number of Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) queries that trigger SQL queries. It may take longer to run the query the first time if connections to the SMS WMI provider and Microsoft SQL Server must be started.

MORE INFORMATION

You can view the collection query process in the Smsprov.log file. The file is located in the SMS\Logs folder. The Collection query information is similar to the following query information:
[644][Wed 11/12/2003 17:10:36]:CSspQueryForObject :: Execute...
[644][Wed 11/12/2003 17:10:36]:Execute WQL =select * from SMS_CM_RES_COLL_SMS000HS where ResourceID=20
[644][Wed 11/12/2003 17:10:36]:Execute SQL =select  all SMS_CM_RES_COLL_SMS000HS.ClientType,SMS_CM_RES_COLL_SMS000HS.Domain,
SMS_CM_RES_COLL_SMS000HS.IsAssigned,SMS_CM_RES_COLL_SMS000HS.IsClient,
SMS_CM_RES_COLL_SMS000HS.IsDirect,SMS_CM_RES_COLL_SMS000HS.Name,
SMS_CM_RES_COLL_SMS000HS.MachineID,SMS_CM_RES_COLL_SMS000HS.ArchitectureKey,
SMS_CM_RES_COLL_SMS000HS.SiteCode,SMS_CM_RES_COLL_SMS000HS.SMSID from _RES_COLL_SMS000HS AS SMS_CM_RES_COLL_SMS000HS where SMS_CM_RES_COLL_SMS000HS.MachineID = 20

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
