No Functional Systems Management Server 2003 Standard Client Icons Appear in Control Panel on a Windows NT 4.0-Based Computer When You Are Logged On As a User from Another Domain (829826)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003
SYMPTOMSWhen you install the Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003 (SMS 2003) Standard Client on a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based computer, log on as a user from another domain that is different from the computer's domain and then try to start Control Panel, you receive the following error message: An error occurred while Windows was working with the Control Panel file C:\WINNT\System32\smsrc.cpl.
Additionally, no functional SMS 2003 Standard Client icons appear in Control Panel.
CAUSEThis problem occurs because the user and the Windows NT 4.0-based computer are in different domains. This problem means that the user cannot access required parts of the registry on the SMS 2003 client computer.
For example, when a user from domain A logs on to a Windows NT 4.0-based computer that has the SMS 2003 Standard Client installed and that is a member of domain B, the users from domain A cannot access the required parts of the registry on the computer because the users and the computers are in different domains.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.
