FIX: Access violation occurs when you try to connect to a SQL Server server by using the Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server (829761)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to connect to a data source by using the Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server, an access violation error may occur. You may notice this behavior when the Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server is initialized to prompt you for logon information.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

Steps to reproduce the behavior

  1. Start RowSetViewer.
  2. On the File menu, click Full Connect.
  3. Under Connection in the Full Connect dialog box, click SQLOLEDB in the Provider list.
  4. Under Login, click DBPROMPT_PROMPT in the Prompt list, and then click OK.
  5. In the SQL Server Login dialog box, click to select a server in the Server list, and then provide the logon details.

    Note Make sure that you select the server from the Server list. Typing the server name may not reproduce the problem.
  6. In the SQL Server Login dialog box, click Options.
  7. Under Options, click to select a database in the Database list. You may notice that an access violation error occurs.
