Custom properties of an older Visio file are lost when you open the file in Visio 2003 (829245)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Visio Professional 2003
  • Microsoft Office Visio Standard 2003

SYMPTOMS

If you create a custom property set that has multiple properties in a drawing from an earlier version of Microsoft Visio, and then open the drawing in Microsoft Office Visio 2003, only the first property is retained in your custom property set.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Visio 2003 does not convert your custom property sets that contain multiple properties.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you must re-create your custom property sets in Visio 2003.

To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Visio 2003, and then open the drawing that contains your custom property sets.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Custom Property Sets.

Your custom property sets are listed in the Custom Property Sets dialog box.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • Create a new custom property set. To do this, follow these steps:
      1. Click Add.
      2. In the Add Custom Property Set dialog box, type a name for your custom property set in the Name box.
      3. Select Create a new set, and then click OK.
      4. In the Custom Property Sets dialog box, select your new custom property set that you created in steps 3a to 3c, and then click Define.
    • Re-create your custom property set. To do this, click your custom property set, and then click Define.
  4. In the Define Custom Properties dialog box, click New to add a new custom property, and then define your new custom property as you want.
  5. Repeat step 4 as many times as you want to re-create your custom properties.
  6. Save your Visio drawing.
