IGMP join message takes too long to fall back to V2 support (829190)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows CE .NET 4.1

SYMPTOMS

Joining an IGMP broadcast session takes several minutes.

CAUSE

Microsoft Windows CE .NET 4.1 always uses the Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) version 3 (v3) protocol. If the network routers or servers are not programmed to detect IGMP v3, they ignore the request. Windows CE .NET 4.1 will then try to send an IGMP version 2 (v2) join message after about 2 minutes.

MORE INFORMATION

This fix adds an option to specify the default IGMP version to use when first trying to join. By default, this is still IGMP v3. To change the default to IGMP v2, add the IGMPVersion registry key to your build image. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\Tcpip\Parms] "IGMPVersion"=dword:3

If the value does not exist, Windows CE .NET 4.1 uses IGMP v3 to connect to a router.
If the value is set to dword:2, Windows CE .NET 4.1 uses IGMP v1 to connect to a router.
If the value is set to dword:3, Windows CE .NET 4.1 uses IGMP v2 to connect to a router.
