FIX: The system stops responding when you copy and delete files from the NFS client to Windows Storage Server 2003 (828214)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003-based system may stop responding when UNIX Network File System (NFS) clients repeatedly copy and delete many files and directories on the NFS server. When this problem occurs, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Stop 0x0000000A
This problem occurs when thousands of files are copied and deleted quickly.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the NFS server does not correctly handle pending return function calls. The number of unhandled returns increases as the NFS client copies and deletes files. Eventually, the overflow causes the server to crash.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, contact the OEM for the device.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
