You receive an error message when you click Detect and Repair on the Help menu in Excel 2000 (SP-3) or PowerPoint 2000 (SP-3) (827646)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Office 2000 (Setup) Service Pack 3 (SP-3), when used with:
- Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP-3)
SYMPTOMSWhen you click Detect and Repair on the
Help menu in Microsoft Excel 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP-3) or
Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP-3), you may receive the following
error message: This installation package could not be
opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact
the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer
package. CAUSEThis problem occurs after you install Microsoft Office 2000
Service Pack 3 (SP-3) and apply the Office 2000 Registration Wizard update. The
Detect and Repair feature uses the Setup information that was stored after the
installation of Office. However, when you start Excel or PowerPoint, this
information is not correctly used or initialized. When you try to use the
Detect and Repair feature on the Help menu in either program,
the program does not provide its product code to the Microsoft Windows
Installer, causing the error message. For

Wizard update, click the following article numbers to view the articles in the
