You Receive the "Access Denied" Error Message When You Install Windows 2000 Server Service Pack 3 (826972)

SYMPTOMSWhen you install Windows 2000 Server Service Pack 3 (SP3), the installation does not succeed, and you receive the following error message: Access Denied. CAUSEThis issue may occur if permission settings in the registry are damaged.RESOLUTIONTo resolve this issue, use Registry Editor to reset the permissions on all child objects, and then install Windows 2000 Server SP3. WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. Note If you use custom permissions, you must reconfigure them manually after you install Windows 2000 Server SP3. To reset the permissions on all child objects, follow these steps: - Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type regedt32, and then click OK.
- Click the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE window.
- On the Security menu, click Permissions.
- Click Advanced, and then click to select the Reset permissions on all child objects and enable propagation of inheritable permissions check box.
- In the Security dialog box, click Yes, and then click OK.
