The LED flashing functionality is predetermined for certain actions, such as the low/critical battery notification and when the radio is turned on. The LED has two speeds. When the LED flashes to alert the user that they are connected to a network, the LED flashes one time every three seconds. When the LED flashes to alert the user of a notification, the LED will flash about one time per second. The user can configure whether the LED flashes and the period of time that it continues to flash. For both the 2002 and 2003 versions, if the user sets the LED to flash for a certain period of time, the LED will stop flashing at the accelerated pace when the reminder box has been dismissed.

Sounds and notifications

In Microsoft Windows for the Pocket PC 2002, you can set the Display message on screen option and an option to Flash light for a period of time. These choices are not available in Windows Mobile 2003.

For example, set the LED to flash for five minutes on a Pocket PC 2002 device. When the alarm is triggered, the LED will flash at an accelerated rate as expected. If the Low Battery notification is triggered during the five minute notification period and if the Low Battery notification is dismissed by the user, the LED is also turned off.

Pocket PC 2002 and Windows Mobile 2003 offer the same notification options and behavior for beaming.

For example, set the LED to flash for five minutes on either operating system. Start to synchronize the device over ActiveSync by using an infrared connection. The LED will flash faster. If the Low Battery notification is triggered and then dismissed, the LED stops flashing or returns to the slower flash rate if the device has a current wireless connection.

Reminder notifications

When the reminder is triggered, the LED flashes at an accelerated speed in both Pocket PC 2002 and Windows Mobile 2003. If the battery notification is subsequently triggered and if the user dismisses the Low Battery notification, the LED stops or slows down the LED flashing in Pocket PC 2002. If the Low Battery notification is triggered and then the user dismisses the Low Battery notification, the LED will continue to flash at the accelerated pace.
