A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix.

This hotfix has the following two prerequisites:

- You must also add and enable the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Lanmanworkstation\Parameters\DisableFlushOnCleanup registry subkey. For information about how to add and configure the registry subkey, see the "Add and enable the registry subkey" section.
Restart requirement
You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Installation information
Verify the Shell32.dll file version
- Click Start, and then click Search.
- Click All files and folders.
- In the All or part of the file name box, type Shell32.dll.
- Click Search.
- In the right pane, right-click Shell32.dll, and then click Properties.
- Click the Version tab to view the file version.
Add and enable the registry subkey
Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
To add and to enable the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Lanmanworkstation\Parameters\DisableFlushOnCleanup registry subkey:
- Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
- Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Lanmanworkstation\Parameters
- On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
- Type DisableFlushOnCleanup, and then press ENTER.
- On the Edit menu, click Modify.
- In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
- Quit Registry Editor.
- Restart your computer.
