Windows XP Does Not Support the Formatting of Low-Density Floppy Disks (825352)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac version 6.1 with Microsoft Windows XP Home
  • Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac version 6.1 with Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Connectix Virtual PC for Mac version 6.0, when used with:
    • the operating system: Microsoft Windows XP

SYMPTOMS

When you try to format low-density (720 KB) floppy disks or floppy disk images in a Windows XP virtual machine in Connectix Virtual PC for Mac Version 6.0 or Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac Version 6.1, the format does not work.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Windows XP supports the formatting of high-density (1.44 MB) floppy disks or floppy disk images only.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, only use high-density floppy disks or floppy disk images.
