"Invalid URL Parameter" Error Message When You Configure A Document Library for E-Mail Insertion in Windows SharePoint Services (825213)

SYMPTOMS

When you configure a document library for e-mail insertion in Windows SharePoint Services, and you specify the path of the Microsoft Exchange public folder that you want to link to in the Public folder address box of the Document Library Advanced Settings: DocumentLibraryName Document Library page, you may receive the following error message after you click OK:

Invalid URL Parameter

The URL provided contains an invalid Command or Value. Please check the URL again.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if you use any the following characters (or sequence of characters) in the path of the Microsoft Exchange public folder:

%
:
//
..

You cannot use any of these characters (or sequence of characters) when you specify the path of the Exchange public folder in the Public folder address box of the Document Library Advanced Settings: DocumentLibraryName Document Library page in Windows SharePoint Services.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, make sure that you type the correct path of the Exchange public folder. Additionally, make sure that you do not use any of the characters (or sequence of characters) that are referenced in the "Cause" section of this article in the path of the Exchange public folder .

In Windows SharePoint Services, you can link a document library with a public folder that is based on Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server or later.

Documents that are attached to e-mail messages in the public folder are automatically added to the document library. The document library displays the document, the From address, the Subject box, and the date and time that the attachment is added to the document library. Note that the text that is contained in the body of the path of the e-mail message remains in the public folder, and is not transferred to the document library.

Before you can configure a document library for e-mail insertion, you must first configure the Exchange public folder to work with Windows SharePoint Services, and then configure the virtual server to accept e-mail attachments. As soon as these tasks are complete, you can configure the document library that you want .

Follow these steps to configure a document library for e-mail insertion in Windows SharePoint Services:
  1. Connect to the document library that you want to configure for e-mail insertion.
  2. Under the Actions tab, click Modify settings and columns.
  3. On the Customize DocumentLibraryName Document Library page, in the General Settings section, click Change advanced settings.
  4. On the Document Library Advanced Settings: DocumentLibraryName Document Library page, in the E-mail Settings area, type the path of the Exchange public folder that you want to link to in the Public folder address box.

    This path is relative to the path that you specify on the Virtual Server General Settings page when you configured the virtual server to permit e-mail-enabled document libraries.

    For example, if the virtual server is configured to use http://ServerName/Public as the root path for public folders, and the full path of the public folder is http://ServerName/Public/FolderName, type /FolderName in the Public folder address box.
  5. Click OK.
