MSBBN: Cannot Connect to MN-500 Wireless Base Station by Using an ORiNOCO Wireless Network Adapter (824871)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Broadband Networking Wireless Base Station MN500

SYMPTOMS

When you try to connect to your Microsoft Broadband Networking Wireless Base Station MN500 by using an ORiNOCO wireless network adapter, you cannot connect.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if your ORiNOCO wireless network adapter is not compatible with the encryption level that your wireless network uses. Some ORiNOCO wireless network adapters have a Wired Equivalent Privacy (also known as wireless security, or WEP) encryption limitation that may be inconsistent with the WEP encryption level that your network uses.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, set your Base Station to use a WEP encryption level that your ORiNOCO wireless network adapter is compatible with.

Configure the WEP Settings for Your Base Station

To change wireless security (WEP) encryption strength for your base station, follow these steps:
  1. Open the Base Station Management Tool, and then click Security.
  2. On the Security menu, click Wireless Security.
  3. Make sure that the Enable wireless security check box is selected.
  4. In the Encryption strength drop-down list, select the encryption strength you want.
  5. If you select 64-bit encryption, you can type up to four WEP keys in the Key boxes.

If you select 64-bit encryption, in the Key index drop-down list, click a key index.
  6. The key index number indicates the WEP key that will be activated on the network.
  7. To save the new encryption strength, click Apply.

Update the encryption strength and WEP key stored on each wireless device on your network.
