Content from Personal Sites Is Not Returned in Search Results in a Shared Services Environment (824615)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003
SYMPTOMSWhen you configure a child portal site as the personal site provider in a shared services environment, and you search for content in personal sites from the parent portal site, you may find that no results are returned. No items are returned in the search results even though the content that you search for exists on the personal sites. CAUSEThis problem occurs if the site hops setting for the People content source is not configured correctly in SharePoint Portal Server. This issue may occur if both the following conditions are true: - You have a server farm deployment of SharePoint Portal Server that is configured to use shared services.
- You configure a child portal site as the personal site provider to host personal sites.
In this situation, SharePoint Portal Server does not crawl (to search content to include it in an index) the People content source correctly. As a result, the content from personal sites is not included in the search results. WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, edit the crawl configuration settings of the People content source and set the number of site hops to 1. When you do so, the content from personal sites is included in the search results. To configure the site hops setting for the People content source, follow these steps: - On your portal site, click Site Settings.
- On the Site Settings page, in the Search Settings and Indexed Content section, click Configure search and indexing.
- On the Configure Search and Indexing page, in the Other Content Sources section, click Manage content sources.
- On the Manage content sources page, move your pointer over the People content source, click the arrow that appears, and then click Edit.
- On the Existing Web page or Web site content source page, in the Crawl Configuration section, do the following:
- Click Custom - specify page depth and site hops.
- Click to select the Limit site hops check box, and then type 1 in the box.
- Make sure that the Limit page depth check box is not selected.
- Click OK.
- On the Manage content sources page, move your pointer over the People content source, click the arrow that appears, and then click Start Full Update.
