SUMMARY

This article discusses the various ways that you can use the Infrared (IR) port on your Macintosh computer with a Virtual PC virtual machine.

MORE INFORMATION

You can access the IR port on your Macintosh computer by using any of the following methods:
  • Use the Shared Folders feature to connect to a hard disk or to removable media.
  • Use a TCP/IP network connection.
  • Use a serial connection through your computer's IR port.

Use Shared Folders to Connect to a Hard Disk or to Removable Media

You can indirectly connect to an IR-capable storage device by using the Shared Folders feature of Virtual PC. The IR storage device must be mounted by the Macintosh operating system (OS).
  1. On the Virtual PC toolbar, click Share Folder.
  2. Locate the IR device.
  3. Set the drive letter for the IR device.
  4. If you want to always share this IR device, click to select the Share every time check box.
  5. Click Share.

Use a TCP/IP Network Connection

If your Macintosh computer has been configured to connect to an IR network through TCP/IP, all you have to do is configure your virtual machine to use Shared Networking. To set up Shared Networking, follow these steps:
  1. Start Virtual PC.
  2. In the Virtual PC List, dialog box, click the virtual machine that you want to configure.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Click Networking.
  5. Click to select the Enable networking check box.
  6. Click Shared Networking.
  7. Click OK.

Use a Serial Connection

If you are using your IR port on your Macintosh computer as a serial connection, you can use the Virtual PC COM Port feature to access the IR port as a serial port from the virtual machine's guest OS. To set the virtual machine's COM Port settings, follow these steps:
  1. In the Virtual PC List dialog box, click the virtual machine that you want to configure.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click COM2. (COM1 is typically used for modem connections.)
  4. Click Mac serial port.
  5. Select the IR port from the list.
  6. Click OK.
