The Server Configuration Application Cannot Connect to the Administrative Site in IIS 6.0 (824487)

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Content Management Server (MCMS) 2002 on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, the default setup creates the Server Configuration Application (SCA) under the SharePoint Team Services administrative site that is used to administer the FrontPage Server Extension. Because of this problem, the SCA cannot open and you cannot configure the site.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 in Windows Server 2003 is installed without an administrative site. This configuration helps reduce security vulnerabilities. However, during the setup of MCMS, the installation automatically populates the entry points for both the MCMS read/read-only site and the MCMS administrative site. Unless you manually select a different site to host the MCMS administrative site during setup, the MCMS administrative site is installed under the SharePoint Team Services administrative site.

Note In IIS, the MCMS administrative site is the NRConfig virtual directory.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, create a separate Web site before you try to install MCMS. When you install MCMS, configure this separate Web site as the MCMS administrative site.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

You can help to reduce your exposure to malicious attacks if you restrict the newly created administrative site to local access only. You can configure this restriction by creating an IP restriction that denies all access, except for traffic from localhost (127.0.0.1). The administrative site in IIS 5.0 is restricted in the same way.
