MCMS Resources Are Not Available After You Delete or Archive Many Postings in Site Manager (824477)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Content Management Server 2002
  • Microsoft Content Management Server 2002 SP1

SYMPTOMS

During background processing, the database is locked and the site is not available, except for cached pages. Therefore, when a request is made for a page that is not cached, you may receive a 404 page not found error or a long running transaction event may be logged in the event logs.

CAUSE

If a system administrator deletes or archives many postings from Site Manager, background processing takes a long time to run, up to 100 postings for each minute. Anyone who administers a site by using Site Manager, including staging and production, may experience this problem.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

To help improve performance and to help decrease the chance of receiving a 404 page not found error while background processing is running, Microsoft recommends that you install Microsoft Content Management Server (MCMS) 2002 Service Pack 1 (SP1). This service pack helps to improve the performance of the background processing process, but it does not remove the database lock that causes the 404 page not found error.
