Internet Explorer Unexpectedly Quits When You Exit an HTML Web Page That Contains VML Elements (824468)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0

SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 to view an HTML Web page that contains Vector Markup Language (VML) elements, Internet Explorer may unexpectedly quit (crash) when you exit the page. You may also receive an error message that is similar to the following error message when you exit the page:
Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the Vgx.dll file may cause the class factories for the VML elements to release too early. As a result, an access violation occurs. Typically, the access violation occurs in Mshtml when Mshtml calls the ClearInterfaceFn function.
