Cannot Install or Run Some Programs from Shared Folder (824351)

SYMPTOMS

You may not be able to install or run some programs when the program files are located in a shared folder.

CAUSE

This issue may occur for various reasons, including (but not limited to) the following:
  • The program may not support the option to install or run the program from a shared folder. The same program may not support the option to install or run the program from a network UNC share for similar reasons.
  • The program may not be completely compatible with virtual machine (guest PC) technology.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, copy or move the program files to a local drive image on the guest operating system (for example, on the C drive or the D drive of the guest operating system), and then run or install the program from there.

With folder sharing, a virtual machine (or guest PC) can access a host machine folder or volume as if it were a virtual machine folder or volume.

With this feature, you can easily transfer files between machines (host and guests). Because a host machine folder can be shared by two virtual machines that are running at the same time, you can also use folder sharing to transfer files between one virtual machine and another.

There are two ways to activate folder sharing.
  • PC Settings
    You can specify a host machine folder or volume to share with a particular virtual machine using the Shared Folder Settings.
  • PC Toolbar
    You can specify a host machine folder or volume to share with a particular virtual machine by using the contextual menu in the PC toolbar, or by dragging the folder or volume to the folder icon on the virtual machine PC bottom toolbar.

Note Folder sharing assumes that Virtual PC Additions has already been installed on the virtual machine.
