Microsoft Access Quits When You Use Keyboard Actions to Link an ODBC Table (824175)

SYMPTOMS

When you use keyboard actions to link an Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) table, Access 2002 may quit unexpectedly. You may receive the following error message:

Microsoft Access has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.


You may also notice that Access may restart automatically.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:
  • Method 1

    Use the mouse exclusively.
  • Method 2

    Instead of pressing ALT+DOWN ARROW or ALT+UP ARROW, press the TAB key or the ENTER key.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Steps to Reproduce the Problem

  1. Start Microsoft Access.
  2. Open the Northwind sample database.
  3. In the Database window on the File menu, point to Get External Data, and then click Link Tables.
  4. In the Link dialog box, press the TAB key to move the focus to the Files of Type box.
  5. Press the DOWN ARROW key to open the Files of Type list.
  6. Press the END key to select ODBC Databases.
  7. Press ALT+DOWN ARROW.
