Windows Server 2003 Domain Controller May Stop Responding If Systems Management Server 2.0 Is Installed (824153)

SYMPTOMS

When you restart a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 domain controller that has Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0 installed, the computer may stop responding when it starts SMS services.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix Information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next SMS 2.0 service pack that contains this hotfix.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem and to restart Windows Server 2003, follow these steps:
  1. Restart the computer.
  2. When you receive the message "Please select the operating system to start," press F8.
  3. In "Windows Advanced Option Menu," use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode, and then press ENTER.

    Note NUM LOCK must be off before the arrow keys on the numeric keypad will function.
  4. If other operating systems are installed on the computer, click "Microsoft Windows Server 2003" on the menu list, and then press ENTER.
  5. Start Safe Mode, and then log on using an account with administrative credentials.
  6. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
  7. In the services list, right-click SMS Client Service, and then click Properties.
  8. Change the Startup type to Manual, and then click OK.
  9. Click Start, and then click Shut Down.
  10. Select Restart from the drop-down list, and then click OK to restart the computer.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
