Secondary Certificates on a Smart Card Are Not Propagated to the User's Local Certificate Store (824133)

SYMPTOMS

When a user logs on to a domain by using smart card authentication, only the logon certificate (the key pair from the default container) is propagated to the user's My certificate store. Other certificates on the smart card, such as a certificate for signing or for encrypting e-mail messages, are not propagated to the user's local certificate store.

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.

MORE INFORMATION

After you install this hotfix, when users log on by using smart card authentication, all certificates on the smart card are propagated to the user's My local certificate store. Programs such as Microsoft Outlook locate certificates by looking in the My store. If an S/MIME certificate is stored on the smart card, it is propagated to the My store. When the certificate is propogated to the My store, the user can enhance the security of e-mail messages by using a smart card.
