"Directory Service Not Available" Error Message When You Try to Publish a Novell Print Queue in Active Directory Users and Computers (824124)

SYMPTOMSWhen you try to publish a Novell print queue in the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in on a Windows 2000 Server-based system, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following: Directory Service not available. CAUSEThis issue may occur if the Novell print server or servers do not use the expected object attributes for a Windows 2000 environment.WORKAROUNDTo work around this issue, use the ADSI Edit tool (Adsiedit.msc) to manually create the Novell print queue. Note The ADSI Edit tool is part of the Windows 2000 Support Tools component, and it is located on the Windows 2000 Server CD-ROM. To install the Windows 2000 Support Tools, run Setup.exe from the Support\Tools folder.

Warning If you use ADSI Edit and incorrectly modify the attributes of the Microsoft Active Directory directory service objects, you can cause serious problems. These problems may require you to reinstall Microsoft Windows Server 2000. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that occur if you incorrectly modify Active Directory object attributes can be solved. Modify these attributes at your own risk. To use ADSI Edit to manually create a Novell print queue, follow these steps: - Click Start, point to Programs, point to Windows 2000 Support Tools, point to Tools, and then click ADSI Edit.
- In ADSI Edit, expand Domain NC for the domain that you want to create the print queue in.
- Under Domain NC, expand the domain controller that you want to create the print queue in.
- Right-click the container that you want to create the print queue in, point to New, and then click Object. In the Select a class list, click printQueue, and then click Next.
- Type the values of the following attributes for the print queue that you want to create; click Next after you type each value:
- cn. This is the name of the print queue object that appears in Active Directory.
- versionNumber. This value must be an integer.
- uNCName. This is the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path of the Novell print queue, as in the following sample path:
\\NovellServerName\PrintQueue - shortServerName. This is the pre-Windows 2000 compatible server name of the Novell server.
- serverName. This is the server name of the Novell server.
- printerName. This is the name of the print queue on the Novell server.
Note After you complete step 5f, you can click More Attributes for additional print queue attribute options.
- Click Finish to complete the print queue attribute configuration.
- Start Active Directory Users and Computers.
- Locate and then click the container that you created the print queue in (from step 4) to view the print queue.
