You receive an "Outlook is retrieving data" message repeatedly in Outlook 2003 (824118)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2003
  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 with Business Contact Manager

SYMPTOMS

When you work offline, you may receive following message several times:
Outlook is retrieving data from the Microsoft Exchange Server server_name.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when your connection to your Exchange Server is through RPC/HTTP transport protocol. Outlook cannot detect global catalog connections directly to the Exchange Server; Outlook can detect only global catalog connections to your RPCProxy server. As each global catalog connection to the RPCProxy server, you receive the warning message that is described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

When you receive the warning message, you can cancel the request or minimize the message until Outlook closes the message automatically.

To determine the status for each of the servers that you are connected to, follow these steps:
  1. In the notification area, right-click the Network Connection icon for the server you want to check.
  2. Click Status.
  3. On the General tab, note the Connection values.
  4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 for each server that you have a connection to.
