"Virtual server is running FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions" message when you run Windows SharePoint Services Setup or when you try to extend the virtual server with Windows SharePoint Services (823378)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003
- Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services
SYMPTOMSYou may experience one or more of the following symptoms in
Windows SharePoint Services:
- When you run Windows SharePoint Services Setup, you may
receive the following message:Setup has detected that
your default virtual server is running FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions. To
continue Setup and upgrade your default virtual server later, click OK. To exit
Setup and move data from your default virtual server, click Cancel. For more
information about moving data from FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions, see the
Administrator's Guide for Windows SharePoint Services.
- When you click Extend or upgrade virtual
server in SharePoint Central Administration, click Default Web
Site, and then click the Extending a virtual server that is
already running Microsoft FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions link, you
receive the following message: If you have an existing
virtual server running FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions that you would like to
upgrade to Windows SharePoint Services, you must uninstall FrontPage Server
Extensions and then extend the virtual server. If you wish to preserve the
content from your FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions-based site, use the
Smigrate.exe tool to migrate the content to your new Windows SharePoint
Services-based site before uninstalling. For information on Smigrate, see About migrating Web sites.
- When you try to extend the virtual server by using the
Stsadm.exe command-line tool, you receive the following message:
Windows SharePoint Services has detected that this
virtual server is running SharePoint Team Services or FrontPage 2002 Server
Extensions. To extend this virtual server with Windows SharePoint Services, you
must move the site content to a different virtual server, and then remove
SharePoint Team Services or FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions from this virtual
server. For more information about moving data from SharePoint Team Services or
FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions, see the Administrator's Guide for Windows
SharePoint Services.
CAUSEThis behavior occurs if the virtual server is configured to
use Microsoft FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions. Windows SharePoint Services and
SharePoint Portal Server both check whether FrontPage Server 2002 Extensions is
running on the virtual server. This operation is performed to help prevent you
from accidentally extending a virtual server that is already running FrontPage
Server Extensions with Windows SharePoint Services, and to help prevent you
from inadvertently deleting important metadata that FrontPage Server Extensions
uses to maintain the Web site.
Note When you install Windows SharePoint Services, a small warning message appears if the FrontPage Server Extensions are installed. Read the message, and then click OK. The FrontPage Server Extensions and Windows SharePoint Services can coexist on the same computer. However, the Front Page Server Extensions and Windows SharePoint Services cannot coexist on the same virtual site. After Windows SharePoint Services is installed, a new virtual site can be created. Then, Windows SharePoint Services can be installed on the new virtual site. The issues that this article describes occur only when you try to configure Windows SharePoint Services on a virtual site that is extended with the FrontPage Server Extensions.RESOLUTIONImportant This resolution involves extending the virtual server with
Windows SharePoint Services. Follow the steps in this resolution only if you are not using FrontPage Server Extensions on the virtual
server. If you have an active Web site that is based on FrontPage Server
Extensions, consider extending another virtual server with Windows SharePoint
Services. When you follow the steps to enable the extension of a virtual server
with Windows SharePoint Services, FrontPage Server Extensions functionality is
no longer available on the virtual server. To resolve this issue and
enable the extension of a virtual server with Windows SharePoint Portal
Services, remove FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions, restart Microsoft Internet
Information Services (IIS), and then extend the virtual server with Windows
SharePoint Services. To do this, follow these steps. Part A: Remove FrontPage Server 2002 Extensions from the Virtual Server- Click Start, point to
Administrative Tools, and then click Microsoft
SharePoint Administrator.
- On the Server Administration page, click
Administration under Virtual
Servers.
- Under Administration, click
Uninstall FrontPage Server Extensions.
Note If you experience the symptoms described in the "Symptoms"
section of this article, but the virtual server does not use FrontPage 2002
Extensions, delete the _vti_pvt\Service.cnf file if it is present in the
content folder of the virtual server. To do this, follow these steps:
- Start Windows Explorer.
- On the Tools menu, click Folder
Options, and then click the View tab.
- Click Show hidden files and folders, and
then click OK.
- Locate the _vti_pvt folder in the content folder of the
virtual server.
- If the Service.cnf file exists in the _vti_pvt folder,
delete it. To do so, right-click the Service.cnf file, and then click
Delete.
- Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm
the deletion.
Part B: Restart IIS- Click Start, and then click
Run.
- In the Open box, type
cmd, and then click OK.
- At the command prompt, type the following line, where
ServerName is the name of your server, and then
press ENTER:
iisreset /noforce ServerName - Type exit, and then press ENTER to
quit the command prompt.
Part C: Extend the Virtual Server Extend the virtual server with Windows SharePoint
Services.
