Some MS Gothic Kanji Characters Are Cut Off When You Use 7-Point Font in Windows XP (822658)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

SYMPTOMS

When you type MS Gothic Kanji (Japanese) characters in a Microsoft Windows XP word processor (for example, WordPad), the top portion of some Japanese characters may be cut off.

Note This problem may also occur when you print the document to a low resolution (for example, 160 dpi) printer.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because you type the MS Gothic Kanji characters with a point size of 7.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, type the MS Gothic Kanji characters in a point size other than 7 points.

MORE INFORMATION

The MS Gothic font has embedded bitmaps at 12, 14, 15, 17, 21 and 25 ppem. To calculate the value of ppem, use the following formula:

ppem = point size × (resolution / 72)

The upper part of the character displays at 6 points because of where the outline falls during the scan conversion/rasterization. This problem is a computational issue where the 7-point character outline falls between the criteria to turn on the pixel. Because an embedded bitmap does not exist at the 7-point size, an outline rendering is used.
