The 32-Bit Version of a Program Runs More Slowly Than the 64-Bit Version on the 64-Bit Editions of Windows Server 2003 (822654)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, 64-Bit Enterprise Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, 64-Bit Datacenter Edition

SYMPTOMS

If you run a 64-bit version of a program that makes calls to the PSAPI library-for example EnumDeviceDrivers, GetDeviceDriverBaseNameA, and GetDeviceDriverFileNameA-the program runs as expected. However, if you run a 32-bit version of the same program that makes the same calls to the PSAPI library, the program runs much more slowly than expected, and every call that is made take several minutes to complete.
