"Error 2336. Setup cannot create a temporary file in folder" error message when you apply an update to an administrative installation of Office 2003 (822523)

SYMPTOMSWhen you try to apply an Office 2003 update to an administrative installation of Office 2003 that is located on a network share, you may receive an error message similar to the following: Error 2336. Setup cannot create a temporary file in folder Path\FILES\PFILES\COMMON\MSSHARED\DRM\. Verify that the folder exists in your system and that you have sufficient permissions to update it. CAUSEThis issue may occur if you do not have Change permissions to the shared folder on the network that contains the administrative installation of Office 2003. RESOLUTIONTo resolve this issue, make sure that you have at least Change permissions to the shared folder that contains the administrative installation of Office 2003. To determine the permissions that are set on the shared folder that contains the administrative installation of Office 2003, follow these steps: - Start Windows Explorer, and then locate the folder that contains the administrative installation of Office 2003.
- Right-click the folder that you located in step 1, and then click Properties.
- Click the Sharing tab.
- Click Permissions.
- In the Name list, click the appropriate user or group.
- In the Permissions list, make sure that the user or group has at least Change permission to the folder.
If the user or group does not have at least Change permissions to the folder, assign the user or group Change permissions. To do so, click to select the Allow check box next to Change, and then click OK.
To determine the NTFS file system permissions that are set on the shared folder that contains the administrative installation of Office 2003, follow these steps. Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
- Start Windows Explorer, and then locate the folder that contains the administrative installation of Office 2003.
- Right-click the folder that you located in step 1, and then click Properties.
- Click the Security tab.
- In the Name list, click the appropriate user or group.
- In the Permissions list, make sure that the user or group has the appropriate permissions to the folder.
