SYMPTOMS

The text in a Microsoft Office Word 2003 document may appear with reduced clarity (blurry) on some monitors.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, turn off Microsoft ClearType for Microsoft Word 2003 Reading Layout mode. To turn off ClearType for Word 2003 Reading Layout mode, follow these steps:WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Locate the following registry key, and then click the registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options

  3. Right-click the right window pane, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type NoClearTypeNW as the name of the new registry key, and then press ENTER.
  5. Double-click the new NoClearTypeNW key, type a value of 1 to deactivate the ClearType technology, and then click OK.

    Note A value of 0 is the same as a null entry, and this value will activate the ClearType technology.
  6. Quit Registry Editor.

By default, Word 2003 Reading Layout mode uses a display technology that is named ClearType to help increase the sharpness and the clarity of text on the screen. ClearType can significantly increase text clarity on LCD laptop displays, however text image clarity may be reduced on some CRT monitors. You can deactivate ClearType by using the registry key that is created by using the steps in the "Resolution" section of this article.
