No IPX/SPX Network Connectivity After You Install the Gateway (and Client) Services for NetWare Component (822405)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server SP4
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP4
SYMPTOMSAfter you install the Gateway (and Client) Services for NetWare networking component and then restart the server when you are prompted to do so, there is no Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) network connectivity from your server. When you run the ipxroute config command, routing information for one or more of the network adapters that are installed in your computer does not appear.
CAUSEThis issue occurs if both of the following conditions are true: - You install the Gateway (and Client) Services for NetWare component on a computer that has multiple network adapters installed.
-and- - The Auto frame type detection option is selected in the NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol dialog box of more than one network adapter.
The IPX driver may not successfully negotiate network auto-detection on a multihomed computer (a computer with multiple network adapters installed) when more than one network adapter is configured for auto frame type detection. This behavior is caused by a race condition that occurs when one network adapter completes its auto frame type detection and then prevents the other adapters from completing the auto frame type detection process. WORKAROUNDTo work around this issue, configure all but one network adapter in the computer for manual frame type detection. To do this: - On the desktop, right-click My Network Places, and then click Properties.
- Right-click a network connection that you want to configure for manual frame type detection, and then click Properties.
- Click NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS compatible Transport Protocol, and then click Properties.
- Click Manual frame type detection, and then click Add.
- In the Frame type list, click the frame type for your network (typically Ethernet 802.2).
- In the Network number box, type an internal network number if you want to run NetWare services that rely on the Service Advertising Protocol (SAP) agent.
- Click OK three times to close the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box.
- Follow steps 2 through 7 to configure other network adapters to use manual frame type detection, if applicable, and then restart the server.
STATUS
