Money Installs Quickly and then You Cannot Start Money (822394)

For information about how to back up, restore, and edit the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry SYMPTOMSWhen you install Money, the installation may complete quickly, and then you cannot start Money.CAUSEThis problem may occur if there are problems in the Microsoft Windows Registry.RESOLUTIONTo resolve this problem, follow these steps: Step 1: Remove Money- Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
- Click Add or Remove Programs.
- Click Change or Remove Programs.
- In the Currently installed programs list, click Microsoft Money version (if it exists), and then click Remove.
- Click Yes when you receive the following message:Are you sure you want to remove Microsoft Money version from your computer?
- Close the Add or Remove Programs dialog box.
- Close Control Panel.
Step 2: Delete the Money FolderTo delete the Money folder, follow these steps: - Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.
- In the left pane, expand My Computer.
- Locate the folder where Money is installed.
Note By default, Money is installed in the following folder (where drive is the letter of the hard disk where Windows is installed):drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Money
If Money is installed in a different folder, locate that folder. - Right-click the Microsoft Money folder, and then click Delete.
If
you are prompted to confirm the folder deletion, click Yes. - Restart the computer.
Step 3: Run the Microsoft Money Registry Cleaner UtilityTo remove most of the Money registry entries, download and run the Money Registry Cleaner utility, and then restart the computer.

To run this utility, follow these steps: - Click the Download Now link.
- In the File Download dialog box, click Open.
- Click Yes when you receive the following message:This utility removes the Microsoft Money 2001 registry entries and you will no longer be able to run the program without reinstalling. Continue?
- Click OK when you receive the following message:Finished!
Step 4: Remove the Remaining Money Registry EntriesWARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. To remove the remaining Money registry entries, follow these steps: - Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData - The UserData folder contains installation information for programs that are installed in Windows.
Note Do not delete the userdata folder, or any of its subfolders unless instructed in this step.
Do one of the following:- For Money 2002, if the UserData key contains an entry that begins with S-1-5-18, expand the folder, and then expand the Products folder. The Products folder may contain several folders that have long names that contain AlphaNumeric characters. Expand each of these folders one at a time, and then click the InstallProperties folder. If the DisplayName shows as Microsoft Money 2002, go back up one folder level and delete the folder that contains the AlphaNumeric characters. Be careful to delete only this folder.
-or- - For Money 2001, if the UserData key contains an entry that begins with S-1-5-21, expand the folder, and then expand the Products folder. The Products folder may contain several folders that have long names that contain AlphaNumeric characters. Expand each of these folders one at a time, and then click the InstallProperties folder. If the DisplayName shows as Microsoft Money 2001, go back up one folder level and delete the folder that contains the AlphaNumeric characters. Be careful to delete only this folder.
- Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall - The Uninstall folder may contain several folders that have long names that contain AlphaNumeric characters. Click each of these folders one at a time. If the DisplayName refers to Microsoft Money, delete the specific folder that contains the AlphaNumeric characters. Be careful to delete only this folder.
- On the Registry menu, click Exit.
Step 5: Restart and ReinstallTo completely remove Money, restart your computer. After the computer has restarted, try to install Money again.
