Cannot Install Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 on a Computer Where the Hummingbird NFS Maestro Client Program Is Installed (822217)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP4
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional SP4
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server SP4


SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4), you may experience one of the following symptoms:
  • During Setup, you receive the following error message:
    An error in updating your system has occurred.

    Select 'OK' to undo the changes that have been made, or select 'Cancel' to quit. If you select 'Cancel', your system will be left in a partially updated state and may not work correctly.
    When you click OK, all updated settings from the service pack installation are rolled back to the previous settings.
  • During Setup, you receive the following error message:
    An error in updating your system has occurred.

    Windows 2000 has been partially updated and may not work properly. It is recommended that you use your Emergency Repair disk to repair your system. To do this, insert the Windows 2000 Setup Boot Disk into the floppy drive, restart your computer, and then select the Emergency Repair option.
    When you click OK, the service pack installation is not rolled back.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if you try to install Windows 2000 SP4 on a computer where the Hummingbird NFS Maestro Client program is installed.
  • You receive the first error message described in the "Symptoms" section when you install the NFS Maestro Client program on a Windows 2000-based computer and then try to install Windows 2000 SP4.
  • You receive the second error message described in the "Symptoms" section when you install the NFS Maestro Client program on a Windows 2000-based computer, install Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2), install Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3), and then try to install Windows 2000 SP4.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, remove the NFS Maestro Client program before you install Windows 2000 SP4. When the computer has been successfully updated to Windows 2000 SP4, reinstall the NFS Maestro Client program.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

The error messages that are described in the "Symptoms" section have also occured on computers that do not run the NFS Maestro Client software and do not have update 313664 installed. In this case, you may resolve the problem if you install update 313664.
