SYMPTOMS

When you apply a Microsoft Office XP update on a Microsoft Windows operating system that has a system locale that has a different language than Microsoft Office XP, you may be required to provide source media.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Microsoft Windows Installer is not correctly identifying the language capabilities of some files. If the language of the existing file is determined to be different than expected, Windows Installer unnecessarily tries to replace the file, and this results in a request for source media.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

To resolve this problem, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site: Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The files that are contained in the patch are full-file versions. If any installation activity tries to reinstall them, the files are cached locally. This avoids the requirement to access the original source media. A version of the Windows Installer that addresses this problem is in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP-1). This update to the Windows Installer is also scheduled to be part of Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP-4).
