XCCC: Server Does Not Respond When You Create or Modify a Recurring Appointment (822103)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to create a new appointment or try to remove an appointment from a conferencing calendar, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:
  • Your mailbox does not appear correctly in Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA). Either the OWA Web page takes a long time to load, or OWA functionalities such as creating new messages, sending mail, or creating appointments no longer work.
  • The conferencing Web page does not display conferences or does not permit you to create conferences.
If you wait a long time, the server again responds as you expect.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you have a large conferencing calendar that has the following characteristics:
  • There are many recurring items.

    -and-
  • Each of the recurring items has a long recurrence.
This problem occurs when the Exchange 2000 Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) component expands the appointment occurrences. When CDO expansion locks the public folder, new appointments cannot be read or written to the conference calendar. Additionally, the conferencing Web page cannot display conferences or create conferences.

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Prerequisites

To install this hotfix, you must be running Exchange 2000 Server SP3.

Restart Requirement

To complete the installation of this hotfix, you must stop and then restart the following services:
  • World Wide Web Publishing Service
  • Microsoft Search
  • Microsoft Exchange Information Store
  • Intersite Messaging
  • Microsoft Exchange MTA Stacks
  • Microsoft Exchange System Attendant
  • Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP)
  • Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine
  • Microsoft Exchange POP3
  • Network News Transport Protocol (NNTP)
  • Microsoft Exchange IMAP4
  • IIS Admin Service
  • Microsoft Exchange Management
  • Windows Management Instrumentation
822103 Setup prompts you to restart these services automatically during the hotfix installation. If you click Continue, the services are stopped and restarted. If you click Abort, the hotfix installation quits. You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

After you install this hotfix, the default number of maximum iterations for each appointment expansion is reduced from 100,000 to 10,000. However, you can modify this setting. To do so, edit the following Windows registry subkey.

Value name: MaxIterationsPerExpansion
Value type: REG_DWORD
Value data: 10000 (default)

You can set this registry value to a value from 0 (zero) to an undefined maximum value.

Additionally, the following new registry value is available to enforce a time limit for item expansions:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\EXCDO\Parameters

Value name: MaxSecondsPerExpansion
Value type: REG_DWORD
Value data: 30 (default) 30 seconds

You can set this registry value to a value from 0 (zero) seconds to a maximum value of 300 (5 minutes).
