Troubleshooting Error Messages in Internet Mail Wizard in Exchange Server 2003 (821830)

Use Internet Mail Wizard in Exchange Server 2003 to configure a server that is running Exchange Server 2003 or Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server to send Internet mail, to receive Internet mail, or to send and to receive Internet mail. Internet Mail Wizard is intended primarily for use in small-sized to medium-sized companies with environments that are less complex than environments in large enterprise companies.

Note that only servers in your organization that are running either Exchange Server 2003 or Exchange 2000 appear on the Server Selection page of the wizard. You cannot use the wizard to configure a server that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 or earlier.

To run Internet Mail Wizard:

1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
2. Right-click your Exchange organization, and then click Internet Mail Wizard.
3. Follow the instructions that appear on the pages of the wizard.

The configuration changes that are performed by the wizard are written to a log file, including information about whether these changes are successful or not. The log file is named Exchange Internet Mail Wizard.log and it is located in the My Documents folder of the user who runs the wizard.

Note You cannot run Internet Mail Wizard if any of the following conditions are true:

• You modified the default configuration settings of the Default SMTP Virtual Server.
• You created an additional SMTP virtual server.
• The server is a node on a Windows Cluster service-based cluster.
• The server is a node on a Network Load Balancing cluster.
• The server contains multiple network interface cards that are configured with separate networks, where Internet protocol (IP) routing is enabled between the networks.

If you previously modified the default configuration settings of the Default SMTP Virtual Server, if you created additional SMTP virtual servers, or if you created an SMTP connector, you must reset your server configuration to use the default settings before you can run the wizard.

Troubleshooting

The following is a list of issues that may occur when you run Internet Mail Wizard, including information about how to troubleshoot and resolve each issue:

• "You Must Be Delegated the Exchange Administrator Role or Exchange Full Administrator Role on the Organization Level to Run the Wizard" Error Message

  When you run Internet Mail Wizard, you may receive the following error message:

  Internet Mail Wizard failed, you must be delegated the Exchange Administrator role or Exchange Full Administrator role on the Organization level to run the wizard.

  This issue may occur if you do not have sufficient permissions to run the wizard.
  
  To resolve this issue, delegate the Exchange Administrator role or the Exchange Full Administrator role at the organizational level.

• You Cannot Add SMTP Domains

  You may find that you cannot add an SMTP domain on the SMTP Domains for Inbound Mail page of the wizard.
  
  This issue may occur if multiple recipient policies exist in Exchange System Manager.

• "SMTP Virtual Server 'Default SMTP Virtual Server' on the Selected Server Does Not Have the Binding of All Unassigned/Port 25" Error Message

  When you run Internet Mail Wizard, you may receive the following error message:

  The SMTP virtual server 'Default SMTP Virtual Server' on the selected server does not have the binding of all unassigned/port 25.

  The issue may occur if the Default SMTP Virtual Server is configured to use a specific IP Address.
  
  To resolve this issue, configure the IP address of the Default SMTP Virtual Server to use the default setting of (All Unassigned).

• "Selected Server Has More than One SMTP Virtual Server" Error Message

  When you run Internet Mail Wizard, you may receive the following error message:

  The selected server has more than one SMTP virtual server.
  ID no: c103b531

  This issue occurs when there is more than one SMTP virtual server configured on the server.
  
  To resolve this issue, remove the additional SMTP virtual server. By default, one SMTP virtual server, the Default SMTP Virtual Server, is installed on the server when you install Exchange.

• "SMTP Domains Cannot Contain '@'" Error Message

  When you run Internet Mail Wizard, you may receive the following error message:

  SMTP Domains cannot contain '@'.
  ID no: c103b56c
  Exchange System Manager

  This issue may occur if you use the at sign (@) in an SMTP domain name. Names of SMTP domains cannot contain the at sign (@). Do not use the at sign (@) when you configure an SMTP domain name in the wizard.

• "Access Is Denied" Error Message

  When you run Internet Mail Wizard, you may receive the following error message:

  Access is denied.
  Operation: Write to the log file.
  Facility: Win32
  ID no: c00700005

  This error message indicates that you cannot write to the log file in the My Documents folder. This issue may occur if you do not have sufficient permissions to the My Documents folder in your user profile.
  
  You can complete the configuration of the Exchange server by using the wizard, however, no information is written to the log file. To resolve this issue, make sure that you have sufficient Read and Write permissions to the My Documents folder.

• "Selected Server Has No SMTP Virtual Server" Error Message

  When you run Internet Mail Wizard, you may receive the following error message:

  The selected server has no SMTP virtual server.
  ID no: C103b532

  This issue may occur if you do not have sufficient permissions.
  
  You must be delegated the Exchange Administrator or Exchange Full Administrator role at the organization level. If you are delegated at the organization level, make sure that security inheritance is propagated throughout the correct groups.

• "RPC Server Is Unavailable" Error Message

  When you run Internet Mail Wizard, you may receive the following error message:

  The RPC server is unavailable.
  Facility: Win32
  ID no: 800706ba

  This issue may occur if the server that you want to configure is not available (offline).
  
  To troubleshoot this issue, determine whether you can connect to the server by using the IP address and the fully qualified domain name (FQDN).
