FIX: Windows Media Player 9 Series Seek Bar Has Zero Length on Certain DVDs (820771)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series for Windows XP
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series for Windows 2000
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series for Windows 98 Second Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series for Windows Millennium Edition

SYMPTOMS

Some DVD titles may not have a seek bar when you play the DVDs in Windows Media Player 9 Series. When the seek bar is moved, the video may be reset to the beginning. The titles include the following:
  • Toy Story 2
  • A Thomas Crown Affair
  • Lord of the Rings
You can still click the chapters listed in the Player user interface to move through the DVD.

CAUSE

This occurs because of a race condition in the Windows Media Player. When this occurs, Windows Media Player does not fire certain notifications because of a cached duration value. In turn, the Windows Media Player incorrectly sets the duration of the DVD title to zero, and this causes the seek bar to be disabled.

RESOLUTION

The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:
