Running Exchange 2000 FORESTPREP After You Run Exchange 2003 FORESTPREP Allows You to Install Exchange 2000 but Creates a GUID for the Organization Name (820112)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

After you prepare your Microsoft Active Directory directory service domain for an Exchange Server 2003 installation by using the /forestprep and /domainprep commands you can successfully run the Exchange 2000 /forestprep and /domainprepcommands on the same domain. You are then able to install Exchange 2000 on a domain controller, but you are not prompted to join an existing site or to create a new site. A new organization name in the form of a globally unique identifier (GUID) is automatically assigned to the new organization.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow this procedure:
  1. Remove Exchange 2000.
  2. Run Exchange Server 2003 Setup by using the /removeorg switch to remove the organization created by Exchange Server 2000 Setup.
  3. Run Exchange 2003 by using the /forestprep switch to update the Active Directory for Exchange Server 2003.
  4. Install an Exchange Server 2003 computer as the first server in the new organization by naming the organization (by using the name that you want).
  5. Add any required Exchange 2000 servers to the organization.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
