Printing Preference Options Are Not Available When You Use Internet Printing Protocol (819763)

SYMPTOMS

When you view the properties of a printer that is configured to use Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) and then you click Printing Preferences, some of the printing preferences options do not appear. The options do appear when you configure the printer connection to use a standard remote procedure call (RPC).

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if you use a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) address to connect to a printer on your local intranet and if that connection uses IPP. IPP connections are more limited than RPC true-connect connections because IPP connections do not support enhanced metafile (EMF) features. The connection uses IPP if either of the following conditions is true:

You use the Add Printer Wizard to configure your printer connection, and you select the Connect to a printer on the Internet or on a home or office network option.
Your Microsoft Internet Explorer security zone settings for Internet and local intranet are set to Medium or higher, and you type the printer's URL directly in your Web browser.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use RPC to connect to printers on your local intranet. To configure an RPC connection, do one of the following:

Do not select the Connect to a printer on the Internet or on a home or office network option to configure your printer. If you want to use a Web browser to connect to a printer, configure your Internet Explorer security zone setting for local intranet to Medium-low or lower (if you think you can use this setting safely). In the Address box of your Web browser, type the URL of the printer, or type the following to connect to and install the printer:
http://servername/printershare
If you use the Add Printer Wizard to configure your printer connection, click to select Find a printer in the directory, or click to select Connect to this printer (or to browse for a printer, select this option, and then click Next.
Use a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) address to connect to the printer. To do so, click Start, click Run, type \\PrintServer\Printer in the Open box, and then click OK.
