Hyperlinks of Published Documents in the Document Library Are Encoded By Using UTF-8 After You Install SharePoint Portal Server Service Pack 2a (819530)

SYMPTOMS

After you install SharePoint Portal Server Service Pack 2a (SP2a), you may find that hyperlinks of published documents in the Document Library are encoded by using canonical Unicode Transmission Format-8 (UTF-8) instead of by using Unicode.

For example, when you position the pointer over the title of a checked-in, unpublished document in the Document Library, the URL of the file that is displayed in the status bar of your Web browser is encoded in Unicode. When you position the pointer over the title of the document after you publish it, the URL of the file is encoded in UTF-8.

As a result, if the hyperlink contains double-byte character set (DBCS) characters, the URL of the published document is much longer than you expect. This problem may occur in language versions that use DBCS characters, such as Japanese, Korean, and Chinese.

RESOLUTION

This problem was first fixed in a hotfix that is now contained in a service pack. If you have installed SharePoint Portal Server 2001 Service Pack 3 or a later service pack, you do not have to apply the hotfix.

Hotfix information

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001.
