The fle name and location of a Visio drawing that is managed by DMS is displayed in the "Save As" dialog box (818051)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Visio 2002 Professional
  • Microsoft Visio 2002 Standard

SYMPTOMS

When you use Visio with an Open Document Management API (ODMA) program, and you save a drawing that is managed by the Document Management System (DMS) to a location that is outside the document management system, such as your local hard disk, the Save As dialog box in Visio may display the actual file name and location of the drawing, as it appears in the document management system.
This problem occurs because when you open or save a drawing in Visio, the file name and location is stored in the drawing. The file name and location information is used to set the default file name and location values in the Save As dialog box. As a result, when you save a drawing in Visio that is managed by DMS, the actual file name and location of the drawing in DMS is also used as the default values in the Save As dialog box.

MORE INFORMATION

ODMA is an interface that provides programs with a method to integrate with client computers from document management systems. With ODMA, you can transparently access a DMS from a desktop program.

When you use Visio with DMS, drawings are typically stored in either the DMS database or a network file location. Most DMS programs reveal only the virtual location of the files. The actual location of the files is not typically disclosed.

Most DMS programs have an option to save the document to a location outside the document management system (for example, your hard disk). When you do so, the document management system returns an ODM_E_APPSELECT value to Visio that instructs Visio to perform a typical (unmanaged) "Save As" operation. Visio displays the Save As dialog box to prompt the user for the new file name and location. If the drawing was previously managed by a DMS program, you experience the symptoms described earlier in the "Symptoms" section of the article. That is, the file name and location that is used by the DMS program is displayed in the Save As dialog box.
