Error Signature

This article describes a program error that can have the following error signatures:
AppName      AppVersion    ModName   ModVersion    Offset

Excel.exe    <appversion>  Mso.dll   <modversion>  0001abe1
where appversion is a number equal to or greater than 11.0.4290.5 and modversion is a number equal to or greater than 11.0.4920.5.

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a file in Microsoft Excel 2003 Beta 2 that does not have a three letter extension (for example, .xls), Excel stops responding and you may receive following error message:
Microsoft Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, rename your file so that the file has a three letter extension, for example, FileName.xls.

RESOLUTION

The problem described in this article is resolved in the release to manufacturing (RTM) version of Microsoft Excel 2003.
