The e-mail messages that are stored in an Offline Folder file are larger than the e-mail messages that are stored on an Exchange server (817957)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you view e-mail messages that POP3 users sent to your Microsoft Exchange Server e-mail account in Outlook 2003, you may find that the sizes of the message are different depending on whether you are online or offline. The messages that are stored in an Offline Folder file (.ost) are much larger than the same e-mail messages that are stored on an Exchange server.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the message stores used for online (.mdb) and offline (.ost) use different properties and attributes depending on where the messages are located. Differences in the Exchange .mdb and Outlook .ost database structure may cause the observed difference in message/folder/mailbox size.

MORE INFORMATION

When you compare the message size of your .ost file and the online data you may notice up to 60% difference in message sizes because of this issue.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
