Site Builder and Site Manager require the Microsoft Virtual Machine (817853)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Content Management Server 2001
  • Microsoft Content Management Server 2002

SYMPTOMS

Site Manager for Microsoft Content Management Server (MCMS) 2002 and Site Builder for MCMS 2001 do not work on computers that do not have the Microsoft virtual machine (Microsoft VM).

CAUSE

Site Manager and Site Builder require the Microsoft VM. The Microsoft VM is not available for distribution anymore in Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows 2000 Server. Existing customers who have Windows 2000 Server CDs will always have the Microsoft VM.

The slipstream version of Windows 2000 Server that includes Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4) will not contain the Microsoft VM. SP4 is due to ship early in the second quarter of calendar year 2003.

WORKAROUND

If possible, use Site Manager or Site Builder on a computer that has the Microsoft VM.

As part of Microsoft's January 2001 settlement agreement with Sun, which was intended to resolve disputes about Microsoft's development and distribution of the Microsoft VM, Microsoft will not be authorized by Sun to support the Microsoft VM after January 2, 2004. As a result, Microsoft will stop including the Microsoft VM in new releases of Windows and other products, and Microsoft will also stop distributing Microsoft Visual J++. Microsoft recognizes that many customers have invested in programs that use the Microsoft VM, and Microsoft wants to work with you over the coming months to help you migrate to alternate solutions.

Because of this agreement, MCMS 2002 Site Manager and MCMS 2001 Site Builder will be modified so that they do not use the Microsoft VM. MCMS 2002 Site Manager and MCMS 2001 Site Builder will be available for download on the Web when they are complete.
