PRJ2000: Error " ...Access Violation... " Error Message or Internet Explorer Stops Responding After Opening Project File In-place (817836)

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Microsoft Project 2000 (*.mpp) file in-place in Microsoft Internet Explorer, and then locate a different Web site or close Internet Explorer, Internet Explorer stops responding (hangs) or you receive the following error message:
Exception Access Violation, the memory could not be read.

CAUSE

This problem occurs every other time you open a Project 2000 file in-place in Internet Explorer.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, prevent the in-place opening of Project 2000 (*.mpp) files in Internet Explorer. To do this and allow the .mpp files to open in Project 2000, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
  3. On the File Types tab, click MPP in the Registered file types list, and then click Advanced.
  4. In the Edit File Type dialog box, click to clear the Browse in same window check box, and then click OK.
  5. Click Close to close the Folder Options dialog box.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
