The Windows backup utility does not succeed when you use a USB tape drive (817765)

SYMPTOMS

If you perform a backup operation or a restore operation by using the Microsoft Windows backup utility (Ntbackup.exe), and you back up to an Advanced Intelligent Tape (AIT) tape drive that has a Universal Serial Bus (USB) 2.0 interface, the operation may not succeed. If this problem occurs, you receive the following error message in the backup report:
Error: An inconsistency was encountered on the requested media.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the USB tape drive uses the USB storage driver (Usbstor.sys). When a USB 2.0 tape drive uses Usbstor.sys, the driver experiences an input/output (I/O) queuing issue that may cause the backup or restore operation to be unsuccessful.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.
