SYMPTOMS

This article describes how to handle the following error messages:

No DNS Server addresses were received from the DHCP or PPPoE server. Enter the DNS Server(s) provided by your ISP in the Network Settings menu.
The DNS servers could not be reached. Verify the DNS Server addresses match the settings provided by your ISP. See www.xbox.com/connect for more information.

THINGS TO TRY

Use the following methods in the order in which they are presented.

Method 1: Mac Address Spoofing

Typically, the Mac Address Spoofing method fixes this issue. Therefore, use Method 1 before continuing to the Method 2 ("Troubleshooting").

Note Steps 1 through 3 must be performed on your computer while online. To verify that you are online, visit the www.xbox.com Web site.

Personal Computer

To perform Mac Address spoofing on a personal computer:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Type ipconfig/all.

Note If ipconfig/all does not work, you can also type winipcfg.
  3. Your computer's MAC Address is listed under Physical Address. Enter this information into the Xbox console.

Note Do not use any address that begins with 44.
  4. Turn off the Xbox console, and then turn it back on.
  5. On the Connect Status screen, select Settings, and then press the A button.
  6. Select Advanced, and then press the A button.
  7. Select MAC Address.
  8. Enter the information under Physical Address. You do not have to include dashes.

Macintosh

To find your Ethernet address on an Apple Macintosh computer:

Note You may have to adapt the following instructions depending on the operating system version installed on your Macintosh computer.
  1. On the Apple menu, point to Control Panel, and then click TCP/IP.
  2. On the Edit menu, click User Mode.
  3. Select the Advanced radio button, and then click OK.
  4. Click the Info button in the lower left corner of the TCP/IP Control Panel. The hardware (MAC) address for your computer is the number listed under Hardware Address.
If you are using an operating system other than Apple OSX or Windows for the PC, contact your computer manufacturer to find out how to obtain its MAC (physical address) address.

Power-Cycling the Modem

After you perform Mac Address spoofing, you must power-cycle your modem. To do this:
  1. Turn off your modem (with the Xbox console connected), wait three minutes, and then turn it back on. Most modems do not have an On/Off switch. If this is the case, you must unplug the power supply to the modem to turn it off, and then plug it back in to turn it on.
  2. Try to connect again.
If the issue continues to occur, go to Method 2.

Method 2: Troubleshooting

This error can also occur if there is a problem with your ISP's DNS servers.
  1. If you have entered DNS server information in the Network Settings area of the Xbox dashboard, verify that it matches the information provided by your ISP.
  2. If you confirm that your DNS information is configured correctly in the Xbox dashboard, contact your ISP to determine whether they changed their DNS server addresses.
  3. If your ISP does not require you to manually configure DNS servers (DNS settings in the Xbox dashboard are set to Automatic), this could mean that your ISP's DNS servers are experiencing problems.
  4. Contact your ISP to verify DNS server status.
