The information in this article applies to:
- Xbox Video Game System
- Xbox Live
SYMPTOMSYou connect the Xbox console to the modem through a router, and when you try to connect to Xbox Live, you receive the following error message: The IP address is already in use on your
network. In Network Settings, use automatic configuration for your IP Addresses
or check the IP Address you manually specified is
correct. CAUSEThis behavior occurs if a computer or another device that is attached to your home network is already using the static IP address that you manually configured in the Xbox Dashboard. THINGS TO TRYTypically, this behavior occurs if you use a hub to connect the Xbox console and other network devices. We recommend that you use a cable or a DSL router to share the broadband connection with multiple devices. - Disconnect the computer or the other conflicting device from the network.
- Try to connect from the Network Settings screen in the Xbox Dashboard.
- On the Main Menu screen, press the directional pad (D-pad) up or down to select Settings, and then press the A button.
- On the Settings screen, press the D-pad down to select Network Settings, and then press the A button.
- On the Network Settings screen, press the D-pad down to select Connect, and then press the A button to try to connect.
- If you can connect, you should use a router, instead of a hub, to share your broadband connection.
