SYMPTOMS

When you try to connect to Xbox Live, you receive the following error message:
A connection to a network device (DSL or cable modem, router, or PC) was not found. Check these possible causes:
  • A cable is not connected. Verify that all cables are connected correctly.
  • A network device is turned off. Turn on all network devices.
  • Your network device may require that you use a straight-through cable or a cross-over Ethernet cable. Make sure to use the correct cable.
Note The error message in this article applies to version 4920 of the Xbox Dashboard. If you use a different version of the Xbox Dashboard, you may receive a similar, but different, error message.

To find the version number of the Xbox Dashboard, follow these steps:
  1. On the Main Menu screen, press the directional pad (D-pad) up or down to select Settings, and then press the A button.
  2. On the Settings screen, press the D-pad up or down to select System Info, and then press the A button.
  3. The kernel version and the Dashboard version appear on the System Info screen. For example you may receive the following information on the System Info screen: D:1.00.4920.01 This example illustrates version 4920 of the Xbox Dashboard.

CAUSE

You typically receive this error message if you have not turned on your router or if you are not using the correct type of cable to connect your Xbox console to your router.

THINGS TO TRY

  1. Verify that your router is turned on.
  2. Bypass the router and connect the Xbox console directly to the modem.
  3. If the problem is resolved, verify that you are using a straight-through Ethernet cable, not a crossover cable, to connect to the router.
  4. Confirm that you can access the Internet on a computer when you connect the computer to the router.
  5. Verify that you are using an Ethernet cable and not another type of cable, such as an RJ-11telephone cord, to connect the Xbox console to the router.
Note If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may have a defective router.

MORE INFORMATION

For more information, contact your router manufacturer or your Internet service provider (ISP), if you lease your router from your ISP.
