Xbox: You receive a "PPPoE Available (direct connection) 4920" error message when you connect the Xbox console directly to your modem and then try to connect to Xbox Live (817621)

SYMPTOMS

You connect the Xbox console directly to your modem. When you try to connect to Xbox Live, you receive the following error message:
A PPPoE Server was found on the network. Your ISP may require a User Name, Password, and possibly, a Service Name for PPPoE authentication. In Network Settings, enter the information that was provided by your ISP

CAUSE

This error typically occurs if your Internet service provider (ISP) requires authentication to connect to the network.

THINGS TO TRY

  1. If you receive this error message, you must type your PPPoE credentials in the Network Settings section of the Xbox Dashboard.
    1. On the Main Menu screen, press the directional pad (D-pad) up or down to select Settings, and then press the A button.
    2. On the Settings screen, press the D-pad down to select Network Settings, and then press the A button.
    3. On the Network Settings screen, press the D-pad down to select PPPoE settings, and then press the A button.
    4. On the PPPoE settings screen, press the D-pad up or down to select Configuration, and then press the A button to change the PPPoE setting to On.
    5. Press the D-pad down to select User Name, and then press the A button.
    6. Use the on-screen keyboard to type your user name, select Done, and then press the A button to return to the PPPoE Settings screen.
    7. Press the D-pad down to select Password, and then press the A button.
    8. Use the on-screen keyboard to type the password, select Done, and then press the A button to return to the PPPoE Settings screen.
    9. Press the D-pad down to select Service Name, and then press the A button.
    10. Use the on-screen keyboard to type the service name, select Done, and then press the A button to return to the PPPoE Settings screen.
The PPPoE user name and the password both have a 63-character limit. If you do not know your PPPoE authentication information, you can obtain your PPPoE information from your ISP.

Note Some ISPs use your e-mail address as your PPPoE user name.
