SYMPTOMS
When you upgrade Windows 2000 to Windows Server 2003 by using HP
Secure Path V4.0a software, you may receive the following error message:
Bugcheck 0x000000C2
(BAD_POOL_CALLER)
This error message may cause the system to stop
responding, and it must be rebooted.
RESOLUTION
Use the following procedures for servers that boot from
directly connected storage to safely upgrade the operating system with HP
Secure Path V4.0A installed.
Note The procedures that are described in this section require that HP Secure Path 4.0A is
installed on each Windows 2000 Server-based computer that is being upgraded. To verify that you have
the correct version of Secure Path installed, locate the file
Raidisk.sys. The Raidisk.sys file must be
version 3.6.2.670. If the file is not the correct version, you must install HP
Secure Path 4.0A.
These procedures require that you disconnect the
Windows 2000 Server-based computer from all SAN storage before you perform the upgrade. If this
procedure is not acceptable to you, you must defer the upgrade to Windows 2003
until HP Secure Path V4.0B becomes available.
This
procedure cannot be used on Windows 2000 Server-based computers that boot from SAN-connected
storage, that have their page file located on the SAN, or that are domain controllers
that have their Active Directory configuration stored on the SAN. Only after
HP Secure Path V4.0B becomes available will you be able to
upgrade these types of Windows 2000-based servers. The proposed new version of HP
Secure Path may be able to upgrade Windows 2000 Server-based computers that are still connected to SAN
storage.
Upgrade Standalone Windows 2000 Server
Use the following procedure to upgrade standalone
servers that start up from direct-connected storage:
- Back up your complete system configuration.

HOW TO: Perform Complete Backups
of the Windows 2000 Server Operating System
- Remove all SAN connections from the Windows 2000 Server-based computer that you are upgrading.
- Upgrade Windows 2000 Server to Windows Server 2003.
- Install Secure Path V4.0A on the server. This will install
the Windows Server 2003 driver. You can verify this by checking that Raidisk.sys is
version 3.6.3.670.
- Connect the Windows Server 2003 server to the SAN storage.
Upgrade Clustered Windows 2000 Servers
Use the following procedure to upgrade clustered
servers that boot from direct-connected storage.
- Use Cluster Administrator to move all cluster-shared
storage to one server.
- Use Cluster Administrator to pause the cluster node that you will
upgrade.
- Perform the steps from the "Upgrade Standalone Windows 2000
Server" section of this article on the Windows 2000 Server-based computer that you
configured in steps 1 and 2.
- Use Cluster Administrator to "unpause" the cluster node that you
upgraded.
- Repeat steps 1 through 4 for each of the other cluster nodes
that must be upgraded.
Recover Servers Receiving the "Bugcheck" Error Message
Use the following procedure to recover servers that
do not have critical operating system information stored on the SAN and are
getting the "Bugcheck" error message.
- Remove all SAN connections from the Windows 2000 Server-based computer that you will upgrade.
- Restart the server to complete the upgrade to Windows Server 2003.
- Install HP Secure Path V4.0A. This will install the Windows Server
2003 driver. You can verify this by checking that Raidisk.sys is version
3.6.3.670.
- Reconnect the server to the SAN.
